Happy birthday, Marc Chagall!

Born Moishe Shagal on July 7, 1887 in a shtetl near present-day Vitebsk, Belarus (back then it was part of Russia), Marc Chagall was one of the most prominent artists of the 20th century. He traveled widely, eventually taking up residence in Paris in the 1920s. There he contributed to the creation of the modernist art movement, but with a unique style drawing on elements of Eastern European Jewish folk culture and art.
